If you’ve found yourself Googling sleep training at 3am with a baby on your chest, desperate for more rest but heartbroken at the idea of leaving your baby to cry alone… I see you and I want you to know that is not your only option.
Let’s talk about respectful, responsive and holistic sleep coaching — because yes, there’s a way to support your baby’s sleep that doesn’t involve crying-it-out or ignoring your instincts as a parent. Your bigger picture is so important too. Did you have a long labour? Does your baby suffer with reflux? Do they snore while they sleep? Are the struggling with weaning? Your journey is significant, and understanding this can be game changing to the process.
What is respectful sleep coaching?
Respectful sleep coaching is a family-focused approach that acknowledges your needs as parents well as your baby’s. It’s considers your baby’s unique sleep needs, temperament and development, rather than forcing them into a rigid routine or using harsh methods. When we respect that sleep is a developmental process and often a symptom of other factors, we can explore and accept unique methods to make improvements.
Rather than “training” your baby, respectful sleep coaching helps guide you and your baby towards better sleep habits using tools that feel aligned with your parenting style and values. It acknowledges the need for kindness, patience and trust, placing the family’s emotional wellbeing at the heart of the process.
What is responsive sleep coaching?
Responsive sleep coaching is an attachment-focused approach to infant and toddler sleep that emphasises attunement to the child’s emotional and physiological needs. Instead of ignoring your instincts to respond to cries, sticking to timed intervals or rigid methods, it encourages you to respond to your child using gradual, supportive strategies which promote independent sleep.
This method respects the child’s cues as well as their limited capacity for self-regulation, aiming to strengthen the parent-child bond and reduce stress for both.
A responsive approach helps babies develop their sleep skills in a way that feels safe and emotionally secure — for them and for you.
How about holistic sleep coaching?
Holistic sleep coaching looks at the whole picture when it comes to your baby’s sleep — not just naps, bedtimes and whether your baby falls asleep independently. It takes into account so so much which I will *try* to summarise....
· Birth
· Age, development and whether their sleep behaviour and patterns are normal
· Health, nutrition and feeding
· Activity levels, stimulation and daily routines
· Personalities and temperaments (within the whole family)
· Chronotypes, sleep science, sleep environment and genetics
· Family dynamic including work patterns, parenting styles, relationships, physical and mental health
· Sleep pathology and red flags
Rather than focusing only on sleep itself, this approach considers how everything is connected, helping you create manageable changes that work for your unique baby and your parenting style.
So… how does it actually work?
Great question! This approach focuses on small, sustainable changes that make a big difference over time. Some of the key elements often include:
- Understanding your baby’s sleep needs by age
- Respecting their developmental stage
- Optimising the bigger picture by considering all the above points
- Creating a conducive sleep environment
- Tuning into sleep cues and body language
- Gradual methods to reduce sleep associations (like needing to feed or rock to sleep) — if and when that feels right for you
Most importantly, we do all of this with respect and empathy — for your baby and for you. Because when you’re sleeping better, you parent better and your wellbeing matters too.
Why it works
Respectful, responsive and holistic sleep support works because it meets your baby where they are and acknowledges your parenting style. Because it’s based on your unique family, the changes you make are much more likely to be helpful long-term.
Instead of quick fix strategies (such as crying methods of sleep training, which, let’s face it, often have short-lived results), respectful, responsive and holistic sleep coaching builds solid foundations for long-term sleep success — with far less stress for everyone involved.
Final thoughts
If you've been told that your only options are to “sleep train or suffer”… please know that’s not true. You and your family are worth so much more than that.
You don’t have to choose between sleep and connection. With the right support, you can absolutely have both. 💛
